Jon Taylor vows to hit Shrewsbury Town goal trail

Shrewsbury Town Jon Taylor today pledged to help end Shrewsbury's problems in front of goal.

Town's 2-0 home defeat to promotion contenders Leyton Orient on Tuesday marked the fourth consecutive home game in which the team had failed to find the net – and the fourth time in six games they have struck a blank. Graham Turner's team, who travel to MK Dons on Saturday, are currently the fourth lowest scorers in the division.

In contrast Taylor has enjoyed a rich vein of form in front of goal recently, netting twice in the last five games having returned to action following a month-long knee injury.

And he said: "You don't just rely on the strikers to score goals. You rely on others to score as well and I fancy myself to score as many goals as possible.

"I think I will score a few more goals this season and I feel confident going into games, so hopefully I can carry that on."

Taylor found the net six times last season and he is already well on the way to eclipsing that tally this time around.

His strike in the New Year's Day win against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park was his fourth goal of the season.

Despite his recent exploits, Town will enter the weekend sitting just two points above the League One relegation zone having played at least a game more than all but one of the seven sides below them.

But Taylor is aiming to help lift his side away from their current precarious position by building on his goalscoring form.

"I just need to keep working hard for the team and hopefully chip in with a few goals and get our team higher in the league," he said.

Town face a testing run of fixtures between now and the start of February, with Saturday's visit to 11th-placed MK Dons to be followed up by home clashes against promotion-chasers Rotherham and Brentford, as well a trip to Swindon.

Town's away game at 15th-placed Colchester on January 28 is the only one in that sequence against opposition sitting in the bottom half of the table.

But Taylor added: "We have got to take each game as it comes and go one game at a time.

"So I will look forward to MK Dons and then whatever's left after that."
