Jon Taylor sets himself a Shrewsbury goal target

Shrewsbury Town winger Jon Taylor today pledged to set himself a goal target for the coming campaign after signing a new deal at the Greenhous Meadow.

The 23-year-old struck seven goals last term - all during a purple patch of 15 games - and that helped trigger interest from higher clubs.

After ending weeks of uncertainty by penning a two-year contract last Friday, Taylor will be intrigued to discover the frontline signings boss Graham Turner is planning to complement his attacking threat.

And he declared: "I will be giving myself a goal target. I want to play as many games as I can next season and score as many goals as I can to get Shrewsbury up the table.

"I'm an attacking winger who can always do a job up front. But my position is on the wing and that is how I play my part up front. I am confident the gaffer will bring in good players up top."

Taylor was alerted to suitors in the summer market by his agent, Michael Ricketts, but stressed: "All I ever wanted to do was sign for Shrewsbury. My agent said there were a few clubs interested.

"But I was always going to sign here. I have been away on holiday and so have the chairman and gaffer, so it was a case of getting everyone together.

"I wanted to get it sorted when I came back, but the gaffer knew all along that I wanted to sign.

"Now I'm just looking forward to getting back into training on Wednesday."

Meanwhile Shrewsbury reformed women's team could make their bow in competitive action next season after an impressive turnout of 20 ladies for a recent training session.

Community development officer Jenny Daniel said: "We can already see the possibility of entering a team into a women's league for the new season."

Training is on Tuesday nights from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and Jenny can be contacted on 07580 473 849.
