Jamie Tolley: Shrewsbury Town have one foot in League Two next season

Jamie Tolley shares his thoughts on Shrewsbury Town after their victory over Tranmere Rovers

While they are not mathematically safe, Shrewsbury Town have one foot in League Two next season.

I fully expect their quest for survival to be done and dusted. I fancied that if we got three points against Tranmere, it would be enough - and the players delivered.

I think Gavin and his team now have a good opportunity to have a little eye on next season, to think about what it might look like and how they’re going to build towards it, because it’s going to be a big job. But I fully think Shrewsbury will be in League Two next season.

It was a fantastic victory for Salop last Friday. Three points in the bag, all ready for the weekend's Easter egg hunt. Just before the Easter weekend, we were given three points from the Shrewsbury players - it was a brilliant start to the weekend.

And it was fully deserved as well. I think the players went about their job efficiently. They took everything the staff had thrown at them during the week and applied it perfectly in the weekend fixture.

A massive shout needs to go to the staff and the manager for his team selection. I thought that was brave and I really liked it. It’s an old-school approach - essentially saying ‘there are 11 shirts, lads, but you have to show you want that shirt and you’ll be playing’.

I really enjoyed that. Ultimately, it’s up to the lads to go out and deliver, and they did that.

John Marquis returned to the starting XI and took the armband back. We’ve heard Gavin talk about the leadership he’s shown in training while injured, and he carried that into the match.

Obviously, he has come under fire during the season - as the experienced captain - but he has accepted it and taken it on the chin. He came out on Friday and delivered a really strong, solid performance.

With the two young lads up front, Bradley Ihionvien and Iwan Morgan, you need experience to keep them focused and connected to the game, and John did that brilliantly.

If Bradley looks back, he’ll probably be disappointed with his first-half chance, where Ismeal Kabia played a lovely diagonal dink onto his left foot and he tried to sidefoot it. A fully fit Bradley there scores nine times out of 10.

He had another effort later in the first half, which the keeper made a good save from. The more minutes he gets under his belt, the more comfortable he will feel in the starting XI, and the better Shrewsbury will be.

Temple Ojinnaka went into the side seamlessly. It was like he’d been there all season and he did exactly what was needed in the centre of the park.

He was strong, brought a real physical presence, and disrupted play. Shrewsbury have been very lightweight in midfield this season, and he helped win second balls, got into the box several times, had a headed effort in the second half, and a good chance from a cutback - probably one he wished he’d scored.

It’s a real positive outcome that he’s in there, though it was unfortunate he went off with cramp - he’s only a young boy!

I can’t see why Gavin won’t stick with the winning team at Bromley, unless there are any niggles. I would anticipate he goes with the same XI, they did really well.

Temple and Freeman were excellent in midfield, stopping Tranmere from playing through the centre.

There’s no expectation on Shrewsbury at the league leaders. Most will probably look at that fixture and think it’s a three-point home win for Bromley, given their position.

But anything can happen in this league - we’ve seen it all season. Who would have thought Bromley would have been beaten recently by Barrow?

So it’s a free hit for Shrewsbury. They can go there, play a little more relaxed, and try to get three points. Why not? And I’m fully hoping they do.
