Graham Turner eyeing Luke Rodgers Shrewsbury Town move

Shrewsbury Town are set to turn to former favourite Luke Rodgers to help fire them out League One's basement.

Town boss Graham Turner revealed Rodgers, 30, was a loan target after last night's 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth. Defeat at Dean Court coupled with Coventry's 3-1 win over Crawley has left the Shrews in the bottom four.

Rodgers, who it is understood Portsmouth are prepared to release – was a popular figure during his time at Gay Meadow before his 2005 move to Crewe.

The Birmingham-born frontman went on to play for Port Vale, Notts County, Yeovil and New York Red Bulls before signing a short-team deal at Fratton Park in the summer.

"We've talked about Luke for some time," said Turner.

"We might be interested in Luke. But he played in the FA Cup last Saturday and I've got to be careful what I say because he's Portsmouth's player."

Early goals from Charlie Daniels and Josh McQuoid left Shrewsbury reeling, although Matt Richards hit back with a 14th-minute penalty.

Turner insisted Lee Barnard should have been pulled up for a blatant hand ball in the build-up to Bournemouth's second goal.

"I don't think there was any doubt that after it came off the post he (Barnard) handled it," said Turner.

"The fourth official suggested he'd warned the referee it was a hand ball, but the ref said it wasn't deliberate. I think he tried to put it in with his hand after it ricocheted off the post.

"But that can't disguise the start we had. Bournemouth are a good team and if you give them a two-goal start then they're going to pass the ball around. They created chances and caused us problems."

Meanwhile, midfielder Luke Summerfield was left on the bench at Dean Court because he suffered a reaction to the painkillers administered to him after he dislocated his thumb in the weekend 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Hereford United.

  • Michael Hector has returned to his parent club Reading to train and play reserve games, but remains a Shrewsbury Town player with his loan period due to expire at the end of January.
