Goldson is gunning for League One glory with Shrewsbury Town

Commanding centre-back Connor Goldson is convinced more success is just around the corner for promotion-winning Shrewsbury.

The talented 22-year-old capped a hugely memorable year by scooping the Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards.

But instead of looking back at all he has achieved, Goldson revealed he has already held talks with boss Micky Mellon to ensure Shrewsbury's success continues next season.

"I spoke to the gaffer last Friday and we agreed that the last thing we want to do is consolidate in League One," he said.

"With the team we have got, we have to aim for the stars. This season we have played a lot of teams who were in higher divisions and we have shown we are as good as them and that we can play at that level.

"We have to aim to do what Chesterfield have done. They went up from League Two last season but they have managed to finish in the play-offs."

Goldson is one of only a handful of Town players who were at the club when they were relegated from League One at the end of the 2013/14 season.

And the defender believes the club has been completely transformed in Mellon's first year in charge.

"You have to congratulate the gaffer, (assistant boss) Mike Jackson and all of the staff for doing what they done – they brought in a team of winners," he said.

"I don't think I even have the words to give the manager the complements he deserves.

"He is a great bloke and a great manager."

Meanwhile, Goldson admits he was hugely proud to be named Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year.

"These awards cap an amazing season," he said. "The players one is very special. I play and train with them every day so it's great to get recognition from your peers."
