Former Shrewsbury Town youngster with sell-on fee sold by Newcastle United to Eredivisie

The youngster made the move from Shropshire in 2023

Former Shrewsbury Town prospect Travis Hernes has left Newcastle United for Dutch top flight outfit Groningen.

The attacker spent the second half of the campaign on loan at the Eredivisie club and made 11 appearances in all competitions, including two league starts.

Hernes, 20, burst on to the scene aged 17 with a goalscoring senior debut against Wolves under-21s in the EFL Trophy in August 2022.

He made two League One substitute appearances at the beginning of the following 2023/24 campaign before being snapped up by Newcastle on that summer’s deadline.

Town inserted a sell-on fee of 20 per cent into the deal with the Premier League club.

Norway youth international Hernes, who is also of Jamaican descent, did not make a senior appearance for the Toon but played three times for the under-21s - where he was a regular - in the EFL Trophy.

Hernes spent the latter part of 2024/25 on loan at Danish outfit Aalborg, where he played 12 times.

And in January he switched to Groningen, who the youngster helped to a Eredivisie finish of ninth.

Groningen have made the call to make his loan deal a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.

Town will benefit with a 20 per cent cut of Hernes’ fee to his new club.

Shrewsbury’s lead professional development phase coach Sean McAllister - a former Town player - this week spoke of an upturn in positivity around the club’s youth set-up after a record-breaking campaign on the pitch for the under-18s.
