Dave Edwards: Two managers would fit the bill as the new Shrewsbury Town boss

Shrewsbury would not go too far wrong by appointing either Michael Duff or even bringing back Paul Hurst as their new manager.

With Town parting ways with Matt Taylor on Sunday, I would be very surprised if there is not a new manager in the next few days. As I write this column on a Monday, I would expect it to be announced by the middle of the week.

There will be lots of applicants as there always are for this job.

It is a tough time with the finances at the football club at the moment, but managing Shrewsbury is still a very attractive job. A new manager will know they will get the time and they will get the opportunity.

Duff is one of those who is up there in the bookies’ favourites, he did a terrific job at Cheltenham, and he did a great job at Barnsley, he has had a bit of a tough time this season at Swansea, but he plays a very different style to what Swansea are used to.

In all honesty, I would be surprised if he wanted the Shrewsbury job, and the elephant in the room is the overwhelming favourite which is Hurst.

Appointing him really does make sense, it would really get the fans on the side. There may be a minority who did not like the way he left the football club, but the majority of fans will be delighted to have him back.

When you look at his managerial career, he did terrific job at Grimsby and at Shrews before.

Ipswich was a bit of a poisoned chalice, taking over from Mick McCarthy who was overachieving. Hurst is a good manager, and Salop fans would be well aware of that.

When you look at the situation he took over the club in last time, we were rock bottom after 15 games, and he managed to get us up the table where we finished quite safely.

Then we had that unbelievable season where we finished third and could not quite get over the line. He probably feels as if he has got some unfinished business at the football club.

For me looking at it as an outsider, I just feel he will probably be the safest way for the chairman and Micky Moore to go.

It is never nice for a manager to lose their job.

Taylor is someone I have met on three or four occasions, he is a very personable guy. Everyone I spoke to in and around the football club who has worked under him, all say how hard he has worked.

He was really diligent with everything he did and he gave his absolute all to Shrewsbury. So in those circumstances, I really wish it would have worked out for him.

But when you look at the numbers and everything that has gone on, you can understand why they have made the decision. I think the chairman has never been trigger-happy – he has always given managers a chance, and the time to turn it around.

But when you look at it from the outside, has this football team made improvements this season? Does this team look like it is getting better?

I think results firstly tell you, and performances have been inconsistent to say the least.

And therefore you can understand why the decision has been made. Shrewsbury find themselves precariously looking over their shoulder.

It has been a turbulent season, just as it was a turbulent summer at the football club with all the changes, and we need to keep our League One safety. It is the away form that has really cost Taylor, and only winning two games out of 14 and only scoring four goals in those games has led to this.
