Chris Doig: Shrewsbury will take time with big decisions

Shrewsbury Town’s will bide their time to find the right players this summer, says assistant coach Chris Doig.

Salop take on Brackley Town a week today in their first pre-season friendly of what is set to be a busy summer schedule.

A massive overhaul is under way at the Croud Meadow after a large number of players were released at the end of last season.

While several other members of last season’s squad were offered new terms but turned down the opportunity to stay in Shropshire. That leaves Shrews with just 12 senior players at present, which Doig admits is not ideal.

“It is early in the fact that the season does not start until August 10,” the Town assistant said. “But I am not going to sit here and pretend otherwise that it would be better if we had more players for training.

“I would be able to do more sessions, which would be more suited to what I want to do certainly.

“It is difficult at the minute to get certain work in, tactical work in, with limited numbers – it is very hard. It is not ideal, I am not going to shy away from that. But there is no need to panic yet.”

Town will look to use the five loan spots they have available to them – but bigger clubs are delaying sending those players out because of the Euros.

Salop still need another goalkeeper, as well as reinforcements in pretty much every outfield position aside from left-back.

But Paul Hurst’s assistant stressed they must make sure they get the right players, adding there is simply no point bringing players in to get the numbers up.

“The gaffer will take his time to make sure he gets the right players and the right characters for the football club,” he continued. “We are not just going to sign players for the sake of getting numbers in. If we have to wait to get the player we think will make the difference to the team then we will be prepared to do that.

“We will work around it in the meantime. It is not ideal, but that is where we find ourselves currently.

“There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, as you can imagine, to get it sorted.

“Certainly, come the start of the season, that is what it is about and what matters most.”
