"Breath of fresh air" - Gavin Cowan on the switch to full-time football at Shrewsbury Town

Gavin Cowan does not envisage any "concerns or obstacles" in stepping up to full-time football at Shrewsbury Town.

Cowan, who was appointed head coach last week, enjoyed several successful years at Brackley Town, leaving the club 15th in the National League despite operating as one of the division's part-time outfits.

The Town role is his first in the Football League and at a full-time club, but Cowan does not expect the transition to present any major challenges.

"From a career perspective, we've earned it," Cowan said. "Without sounding arrogant, we've absolutely gone and earned it.

"This year we've punched well above our weight at Brackley, beating teams like Forest Green Rovers, Rochdale and Notts County, all with two nights a week (training).

"We are very excited to be on the grass four or five times a week. To be able to have that time to give them the information, it's going to a breath of fresh air.

"I don't foresee any concerns or obstacles. I can only see a real positivity and excitement going into Colchester and beyond."

Salop visit Colchester United on Saturday, who sit 11th in League Two, following a full clear week under Cowan's guidance.

The 44-year-old had just two days to prepare for his first game in charge against Barnet last weekend, and Town will look to build on that goalless draw against a Colchester side that has lost its last two league games.

Upon joining the club, Cowan said he is just like those in the stands, insisting he is a "fan" of Salop and vowing to do everything he can to steer them away from the relegation zone and make it a club supporters can be "proud of".

He added: "Results play a massive part in that, but if the players run their hearts out, run like the wind, jump higher than the opposition, run further than the opposition, give everything they've got, a supporter will always walk away with an element of satisfaction.

"That's what we want to do. We want to bring this real high-energy motivation around the players.

"We bring a real strategy to that. We don't play hope football, we play to a certain strategy.

"With those two things combined, hard work, desire, doing a job and a half on the pitch, coupled with that belief and game strategy, where all of the players can be on the same wavelength in and out of possession in all three phases of the pitch, it often culminates in real positive outcomes."
