Shrewsbury boss Matt Taylor: Hard to sign midfielder on free transfer during the season

He comes in to offer defensive reinforcements after Morgan Feeney pulled his hamstring in the 1-0 win against Northampton Town.

With Carl Winchester operating at wing-back, and the injuries to Ryan Finnigan, Jordan Shipley and Elliot Thrope, Shrews have been stretched to the limit in the centre of the park.

And Taylor said that midfield is a difficult position to go into the free transfer market for once the season has begun.

He said: “I think every coach for every team would love more players at their football club.

“Is it something we are actively looking at?

“I believe for you to sign and come into a professional club at this time of the year you have got to be something special, especially in that midfield area.”

Pierre’s next appearance will be his 100th in the Town shirt – meaning he will join a special group of players to achieve the feat. But as the team have been training and preparing for games since the end of June, Pierre has some catching up to do fitness- wise.

And the boss revealed he has been working hard in training this week doing extras to make sure he’s ready when his chance comes.

“Aaron will be a really good signing for us,” Taylor said about him. “He provides exceptional leadership, which I really like about him. He is becoming stronger quicker better which I am really pleased with.

“He has done a lot of extras over the last three training sessions.

“So he is fully committed to making sure that he is as fit as he possibly can be.

“Having said that, if Phil Foden comes up on a free then we will definitely try and take him.”

Having a squad is important for Shrews, as they embark upon another three-game week with lots of travelling involved too.

They make the journey to Barnsley on Tuesday evening before heading north again on Saturday to take on Wigan.
