Matthew Pennington has won praise for putting Shrewsbury Town first and throwing himself back into action following a dislocated shoulder.

The on-loan Everton defender, 26, returned from a dislocated shoulder ‘miles ahead of schedule’ and filled in a more unrecognised right-back role for the injured Donald Love at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Pennington caught the eye in two appearances at Southampton and Sunderland after joining from the Premier League outfit but injured his shoulder in an innocuous incident in training.

“He was definitely miles ahead of schedule and credit to Matty for that and choosing to play,” said Town assistant Aaron Wilbraham.

“A lot of players would’ve taken another week, more time with the fitness coach bedding themselves in until they feel 100 per cent to protect themselves.

“To throw him straight in to help the cause, with Donald getting injured, was massive from Matty to come and step into the game.

“He’ll get fitter and stronger with every game now.”
