Proud Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts shares disappointment with fans after Wolves snatch FA Cup replay

Proud Shrewsbury chief Sam Ricketts admits he can sympathise with Town fans after late FA Cup heartbreak against Wolves.

Town looked set for a momentous fourth round victory against neighbours Wolves after taking a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes to go but Wolves struck twice late on - including a 93rd minute leveller - to force a Molineux replay.

The clubs were meeting in the competition for the first time since the historic 1978/79 season where Shrewsbury forced a quarter-final replay.

And Ricketts' men were within moments of just a third fifth round tie in 35 years but will remain in the hat for Monday's draw - leaving their manager with a case of mixed emotions.

"I probably feel the same as all of the supporters going home," said Ricketts.

"At one bit they're like 'cor that was good', then 'argh - but we didn't win' - after being so close.

"But my overriding thing is the performance levels there.

"Yes, we have to tighten up with a few things but the performance is what I worry about and that was very good."

Greg Docherty's stunner, set up by a fine Fejiri Okenabirhie run, got Town fans dreaming just after half-time - following on from a first period where Salop had held their own.

Defender Luke Waterfall sent the Meadow crazy again with Town's second, a bullet header from a corner, with 20 minutes remaining.

The hosts, roared on by a packed Montgomery Waters Meadow, had star performers across the board against six full internationals in Wolves' starting line-up.

Then at 1-0, visiting boss Nuno Espirito Santo had to call for £35million-rated hitman Raul Jimenez and later seasoned Portuguese international Joao Moutinho and Ivan Caveleiro.

"We weren't going to control the game with the ball today so we tried to control it without it," added Ricketts.

"It can be done, it requires legs and energy and we play with the break. Really good play, Fejiri gets it on halfway and runs away from (Ruben) Neves.

"He has the calmness to pic Doc out when he could've shot himself and he had a touch and superb finish.

"It was always going to be about when we get opportunities can we take them?"
