Paul Hurst backs Dean Henderson to go to the top with England after call-up

Paul Hurst has backed Dean Henderson's call-up to the England under-21s squad as another step in his quest for full international honours.

The call-up means Henderson, 20, will miss Town's League One trip to Gillingham a week on Saturday, meaning Craig MacGillivray will deptise.

Henderson was part of the England under-20s squad that memorably sealed the World Cup crown in South Korea this summer. The highly-rated glovesman has impressed Town fans so far and quickly became a fans' favourite at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Hurst said: "It's good news for Dean and I'm not sure if it's good news for us.

"He was obviously part of the squad (that won the World Cup) but didn't play anywhere nearly as much as he'd have liked.

"I think Dean would probably say he should be in the full squad playing, he's not short on confidence - we know that.

"It's great for players to be involved in that age groups and hopefully he eventually gets the call-up to the full squad.

"I think it's a great platform for him coming here and playing League One football. Hopefully it gets him seen a bit more of in a competitive first-team game in the leagues.

"It's probably a different style of football at times than in the under-21s team.

"I'm pleased for him and hopefully it's a slight reward in terms of how he's started the season as well."

MacGillivray, who signed on a free contract from Walsall this summer, stated his intent to be part of Hurst's first-team thoughts and will get his competitive debut at Priestfield.

There may be a person of interest on the Shrewsbury bench that day, as Hurst toys with the idea of calling on Danny Coyne, the club's goalkeeping coach, to stand in as No.2.

Welshman Coyne, interim boss last year before Hurst's appointment, has previously featured on the bench while as player-coach with Shrewsbury. He is still registered to play, but the 43-year-old hasn't featured competitively since for Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in January 2012.

"We've got Craig," Hurst added. "He'll come in.

"He was unlucky not to start the season. There wasn't much to choose between them. He only let in one penalty and one goal at Telford that went through someone's leg.

"He certainly didn't make the starting line-up because of mistakes he'd made.

"I'm more than happy with him going in there. That was another part of the reason for the game against Walsall, we knew the international we're coming, it was a good time to get minutes in those that needed them.

"He'll come in and we'll take it from there."

With Shaun Rowley out on loan at Tamworth, Town also have academy youngster Cameron Gregory who has featured in training at Sundorne Castle.

Hurst smiled at the thought of Coyne taking to the bench, adding: "I must admit that's something I was mulling over. I haven't seen Danny for a while, I think he's gone into hiding for a week.

"Seriously, it's something we might have to have a chat about. In the past I've not been against going without a keeper on the bench but that was with five subs more than seven.

"Shaun Rowley's out on loan, do I want to get him back for the sake of one game?

"We've also got young Cam who's been up to train a few times, whether or not it's right for him.

"There's a bit to chat through. I'm sure if I said to Danny 'you're on the bench' then he'll have to get changed and he's on the bench but he hasn't done it for a while.

"In fairness, in Portugal when Shaun got injured he stepped up and in the training games and I have to say his form would suggest he's worthy of a contract. He didn't do enough to put me off put it that way!"
