Fleetwood vs West Brom - Match preview

Paddy McNair is in line to make his Albion bow with Carlos Corberan expected to name an otherwise youthful side as they take on Fleetwood Town for the very first time.

After their stunning opener to their Championship campaign, the Baggies head north to take on the Cod Army tonight, with Corberan looking to juggle his slender squad.

He said: “I have to first protect the squad after the level of effort, it is going to be a challenge to play again on Tuesday with the same players.

“At the same time we receive players last week that we didn’t work with and they need minutes to keep growing with everything.

“(McNair), if he trains well, he can probably play around 45 minutes in the next game, same with Frabotta.

“Wallace is a different situation, Diangana is a different situation, that is more or less what we expect.”

Academy graduates Fenton Heard, Reece Hall and Mo Fall were all unused substitutes at Loftus Road, underlining Albion’s need to bring in more new signings.

With Albion’s squad light in pre-season, Corberan has had the chance to see a number of the club’s young talents for an extended period of time.

The likes of Harry Whitwell and Kevin Mfuamba have played a number of minutes – while 17-year-olds Ollie Bostock and Cole Deeming have also been used in a number of the pre-season games.

Both players are highly rated among the coaching staff at The Hawthorns, after signing professional contracts just months after starting their scholarships with the Baggies.

Others – such as Reyes Cleary, Deago Nelson, Josh Shaw and Akeel Higgins – could also be in line for an appearance at Highbury.

Although tonight’s side is expected to be made up predominantly of young players, with new signings Gianluca Frabotta, Ousmane Diakite, Lewis Dobbin and Devante Cole are all expected to feature from the start, having made cameo appearances off the bench in the second half in west London.

But eyes will be on the young talents too and Corberan explained that the current situation at Albion in terms of needing more new recruits, has allowed his staff to have a closer look at what Albion have within their own ranks.

He explained: “I am happy with the attitude at Cambridge [in pre-season] of our young players.

“We brought them [to QPR], they did not play but they will be important for us in our next game.

“They are players who are not first team players, but from our academy and they need to keep working hard to arrive to the first team.

“We always have possibilities to develop players and it is something we will keep doing.

“This pre-season, because we didn’t have many players or bodies, it helped us to know more detail about them, some of them who travelled on Saturday and some who didn’t.”
