AFC Telford United have swooped for left-sided midfielder Danny Edwards in the first move to strengthen their squad for the hectic festive fixture list.

The 25-year-old Redditch man agreed terms last night and will be in the squad for tomorrow's Blue Square North clash at bottom-of-the-table Hucknall - as long as the paperwork goes through in time.

Former Shrewsbury trainee Edwards spent two years at Stafford Rangers, where he played in the Blue Square Premier, before moving to Redditch at the start of last season.

He has been on Telford's radar for a long time and assistant manager Larry Chambers is delighted to have brought him on board.

"Danny can play anywhere along the left-hand side and has a lot of experience," he said. "He had a good season at Redditch and we think the time is right to bring someone in.

"He knew we were interested in him and we're delighted to get him now because it's difficult getting good left-sided players.

"We were playing players out of position at the start of the season and the balance of the side was not right, which I think affected us. We've looked a lot better since we got that balance."The left side has recently been occupied by on-loan Shrewsbury man James Meredith, who is in his second month with the Bucks.

But Chambers insisted Edwards' arrival did not spell the end for Meredith, adding: "We'd like to get him for another month, or even for the rest of the season.

"But we don't know if that will be possible so it was in our minds when we wet for Danny."

Telford won 3-1 at home to Hucknall just four weeks ago thanks to an Andy Brown hat-trick. But the Bucks No 2 expects a tougher affair tomorrow - hailing the impact of new boss Brian Chambers at the Nottinghamshire outfit.

"Brian is experienced - he knows this level and he's already brought a few new faces in," he said.
