Aston Villa player ratings: Defence struggles in Carabao Cup defeat
We rate the players after the route to one trophy this season is lost.
MARCO BIZOT
Had kept the deficit at one with some good saves before committing the blunder for the second. His distribution was a concern.
Error 5
LAMARE BOGARDE
This was just his fifth appearance of the season and he didn’t push his case for more. Error for the third.
Weak 4
TAYLOR HARWOOD-BELLIS
A much less cheerful occasion than his debut. Villa’s backline looked shaky throughout. Should have scored with a header.
Busy 6
TYRONE MINGS
Difficult to recall a game when he has missed so many headers in both boxes. Looked like he was playing on the back foot.
Headers 5
IAN MAATSEN
Has only just returned from injury and had put in a huge shift against Man City. But this was a concerning performance, considering what is to come.
Struggled 5
JOAO GOMES
Villa’s best player and the only one who looked like he wanted to be there from the start. Tested the Bournemouth keeper in the second half.
Worked 6
LEON GORETZKA
Showed some nice touches and his passing was decent. Maybe no surprise there was a lack of understanding with Gomes.
Moments 5
IBRAHIM MBAYE
Comfortably his quietest performance in a Villa shirt. Seemed reluctant to take the defenders on. Curious all-round.
Quiet 5
EMI BUENDIA
Ran the risk of being shown a second yellow card in the first 20 minutes. Disappointed with his passing. Failed to really stamp his authority on it.
Miscued 5
GEORGE HEMMINGS
Missed a huge chance to equalise when through on goal. No doubting his effort but perhaps unsurprisingly for one so young, didn’t always get the decisions right.
Miss 5
BRIAN MADJO
Denied a goal by a fine De Gregorio save in the second half. Showed his strength at times but would have wanted to do more.
Shackled 5
SUBSTITUTES
Alejandro Garnacho 6 (for Hemmings, 58), Alysson 6 (for Mbaye, 58), Ross Barkley 6 (for Buendia, 70), John McGinn 6 (for Goretzka, 70), Tammy Abraham 5 (for Madjo, 75) Subs not used: Cash, Cisse, Kamara, Suzuki (gk).
