Ally Robertson: Foxes winner reminded me of ‘79 and facing Red Star!

What a shame a hectic finale against Championship leaders Leicester City went against us on Saturday.

It led to many debates about the manner of the visitors’ late winner. My view was that it was great for us to get forward like we did – but it just needed us to keep enough players at the back to stop what happened.

We’ve all been in that position, pushing to win a game, putting them under pressure and then all of a sudden they break and have a chance to score.

I’ve been in that position Conor Townsend found himself in! We played Red Star Belgrade at The Hawthorns in the Uefa Cup in 1979 (actually I noticed it was the anniversary of the previous Valencia tie this week) – we were going for the winner and we got beat because I was the only one left back!

We were pushing to win the tie, it was the same there. Playing against top sides, in the league or in Europe back then, you want to beat them. If you’ve got opponents under pressure you try to make it happen.

They were great games, we made so many chances but they broke and scored as I was left two-on-one. Sadly I’d already been booked!

The quality Leicester have, and the passes and movement they did in that instance, were just quick and perfect and it was done. No extra touches, right into their step. It can happen against the division’s top sides.

If it had been against any other Championship team it probably wouldn’t have happened. They looked a little bit better than us in the first half but in the second half we matched them, worked so hard, made chances and we deserved the equaliser.

I was happy to see us get forward and put them under pressure at home.

But taking in the last few games, Ipswich and Cardiff, we’ve played well, put sides under pressure.

We’re making things happen now whereas if you go back a couple of months we weren’t. That is what I want to see.

We were absolutely brilliant the weekend before at home to Ipswich to win 2-0. So many said to me “who was the star man?” I said “no – the whole team were brilliant.” If we keep that going then we’ll do fantastic.

We made Ipswich look like a team lower down the table.

Even just a draw against the Foxes would’ve been great, to say we hadn’t been beaten. But because of how we played in the game, we can still take many positives. It’s been a great little period for the supporters to watch, it’s been enjoyable football.

The last few games it has been a pleasure to watch Carlos Corberan’s team. A couple of months ago we weren’t playing that great, it wasn’t really happening going forward.

All of a sudden the team started to find a way of building on the clean sheets and defensive record with a way to make things happen in the final third.

For a couple of games it looked like we might have had most of our key attackers available and that showed in some performances but we’ve lost Jed Wallace and Matt Phillips, the latter for a good while it seems.

Phillips has been great this season, so I hope he’s alright. I hope we can avoid anything else serious heading into this festive period and busy schedule ahead. I think if we can get to January around this position we’ll be looking good.
