AFC Telford consider transfer move after red card for Russell Benjamin

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today hinted he may be forced into signing a midfielder with Russell Benjamin facing a three-game ban after his red card on Saturday.

Benjamin was instantly dismissed for a challenge on Harrogate's Ashley Worsfold six minutes before the break during Saturday's 1-0 home defeat, the Bucks' first loss of the Skrill Conference North season. Player-coach Alan Moogan is also on the sidelines with a groin strain, which could rule him out for another week. Charlie Barnett is the only other fit out-and-out midfielder in the squad.

That could force Watson act this week, perhaps with a loan capture to cover his numbers, although Benjamin's ban won't kick in until Saturday week.

The Bucks boss said: "We will have to look and see what we can do. Perhaps we need to look to bring someone in.

"Alan saw the doctor after the game on Saturday and hopefully we will get him in for an appointment with a specialist as soon as possible and get it sorted."

Telford do have another first-team midfielder on the books, former Manchester United and Burnley youngster Martyn Jackson, but he's out on loan at Stafford Rangers and recalling the 19-year-old would be to the detriment of the player's development, Watson insisted.

He said: "Martyn Jackson is a project we are trying to bring through so to loan him out to get game-time and then bring him straight back because we have injuries is, for me, not ideal.

"The idea was to get him out so he could learn his trade, which he is fully aware of. And he's done well for Stafford – in spells."

The 10-man Bucks slumped to defeat after Benjamin's dismissal and neither Watson or his opposite number Simon Weaver were sure it should have been a dismissal.

Watson said: "Until the sending off, I thought there was only one team in it.

"The most disappointing thing about the red card was that we lost the ball on the edge of the box, but it wasn't a two-footed challenge."

Weaver said: "You would look at it and probably say it's just a bit naive"
