FA Cup: Wolves v Shrewsbury preview - Rotation needed but Wolves must avoid cup upset

Wolves have not been favourites many times this season but they are overwhelmingly expected to beat Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup third round tomorrow.

The Premier League's bottom club have had a torrid campaign but, now three games unbeaten, they have found some momentum to cling on to.

Salop, following their relegation from League One last season, have had a tough time in League Two and find themselves in a relegation battle of their own.

Michael Appleton's side have lost four on the spin in the fourth tier and have not won since mid-November.

They are in their worst moment for some time and Wolves are in their best moment of the season, meaning it is incumbent on Rob Edwards' side to prove their top flight prowess at Molineux.

It could still be a banana skin of a fixture, however, if Wolves do not approach it correctly and Edwards' team selection will be fascinating.

He will need to rest some players after a gruelling set of Premier League fixtures, but it also offers an opportunity for others.

A change between the sticks is expected and Sam Johnstone is likely to come in, although it could also be Dan Bentley.

Pedro Lima could get a start on his return from loan now that he will be part of the squad and having Matt Doherty's experience behind him at centre-back would be wise.

Academy defender Ojinnaka Temple has made the bench recently and did again on Wednesday night, but has not yet played. He has impressed the coaches and could be in line for a start if Wolves want to mix in some youth.

A lack of options due to injuries means that some first team stars will be needed and we could see the likes of Andre and Ladislav Krejci play, with some rotation in the form of David Moller Wolfe.

Midfield is a problem but Tawanda Chirewa is capable of playing deeper, while the decision on who to play further forward is difficult.

Mateus Mane is Wolves' star right now and it would be a surprise if he played, but we could see someone like Enso Gonzalez given the nod.

Rodrigo Gomes is hoping to be fit enough to make his injury return and a place on the bench would be more likely.

Edwards could also choose to leave out some bigger players altogether, with academy players Luke Rawlings, Ethan Sutherland and Saheed Olagunju all potential options for the bench.

Finding the right balance is difficult but Edwards must get it right.

Wolves cannot afford to be embarrassed in front of their own fans against struggling League Two opposition, but they also need to rotate to give other players an opportunity.

To what extent Edwards gives young players a chance will depend on Wolves' dominance against Town, but there is something to be said for momentum.

Wolves are unbeaten in three games and on their best run of the campaign. Derailing that now would be foolish, even if Wolves' hopes of an FA Cup dream are probably slim.
