Extending Shrewsbury midfielder’s stay was a ‘no brainer’ - Richard O’Donnell

Shrewsbury Town assistant coach Richard O’Donnell says it was ‘no brainer’ to extend Taylor Perry’s contract.

The 23-year-old, who turns 24 next month, signed a two-year deal in Shropshire back in the summer of 2023 with an option of another year in the club’s favour.

Town chose to exercise that option at the end of last season meaning the former Wolves man will spend another year at the Croud Meadow.

Salop made the decision to let eight senior players go when they announced their released and retained list after a dismal season in League One which saw them fall into League Two for the first time in more than a decade.

The decision to extend Perry’s stay, the only player Town did choose to keep, was a no brainer according to assistant boss O’Donnell.

“I think TP is a good footballer,” he said. “We see the energy that he brings and he has got the ability to play in a couple of positions as well.

“With the style that we wanted to implement and the identity that we want to give the club we felt that he was a player that could help do that.

“We see the way he receives the ball and we want him to keep taking it on the back foot and look to play forward.

“We want him to be positive with his forward runs. It was a bit of a no brainer to extend his contract for another year and take up that option.” Perry has not always had it easy during his time at Shrewsbury. He featured heavily under Matt Taylor when he first arrived, but after Paul Hurst was appointed he fell out of favour.

Under Gareth Ainsworth, and Shrews’ current boss Michael Appleton he has come back into the fold and impressed.

And O’Donnell says that sometimes too much change can be hard to deal with.

He said: “It can be difficult when you have managers coming in with different styles and different ideas of what they want from you.

“We really saw how he could fit into how we want to play and what we want him to do.”

Shrewsbury’s squad is continuing to grow in numbers after they announced the signing of Sam Clucas last week - he became the second addition of the summer window after defender Tom Anderson arrived after leaving Doncaster.
