Wolves defender Nasser Djiga is in talks to join Scottish side Rangers on loan, the Express & Star understands.

The 22-year-old joined Wolves on transfer deadline day in the winter window but only made six appearances, with five coming in the Premier League.

That included just one Premier League start, when he was taken off at half-time against Crystal Palace, as the £10million addition from Serbian side Red Star Belgrade was often left on the bench by head coach Vitor Pereira.

Now, the centre-back is in talks to join Scottish Premiership side Rangers, under new boss Russell Martin.

It is understood that the deal, if completed, will be a straight loan for the 2025/26 season and will not include an option to buy him permanently.

Wolves are keen for Djiga to get regular minutes to help with his development and adaption to British culture, and improving his English skills, while it is understood the player is eager to feature more regularly next season.

Djiga played 27 times for Belgrade last season, including in all eight of their Champions League games, before making the switch to Wolves, where he was left out of the matchday squad on the final day of the season.

Wolves are not expected to prioritise a direct replace Djiga, providing they do not lose any other players in that position, with Yerson Mosquera, Santi Bueno, Emmanuel Agbadou, Matt Doherty and Toti Gomes all senior options at centre-back.

However, it is understood that Wolves would like to bring in a left-sided centre-back to give cover and competition to Toti.

After missing out on Kevin Danso to Spurs, Wolves made a late move for Djiga to further bolster their defensive ranks after the previous signing of Agbadou.

Turkish giants Galatasaray made a late attempt to hijack the move with a substantial offer, but Djiga chose to sign for Wolves and completed his medical and work permit in Paris.

Wolves are currently working on more incomings, while they are also focusing on moving on more fringe players.

Tommy Doyle is attracting interest from Championship clubs and Birmingham are pushing for a loan move this summer.

Several other players on the periphery are also expected to go as the club work on rebuilding the team with quality over quantity heading into the 2024/25 campaign.
