Defeat leaves AFC Telford United hopes hanging by a thread

AFC Telford United’s first season back at Step 2 now looks unlikely to end with a fairytale playoff appearance, following a home defeat by Kidderminster in a game that wasn’t short of incident.

The Bucks had the ideal start in this encounter, given to them by Remi Walker, but Charlie Cooper’s peach of a volley levelled things up before Kieren Donnelly capitalised on Jordan Piggott’s error to give Harriers a lead they just about held onto.

Kevin Wilkin put his faith in the same starting eleven and substitutes defeated on Good Friday at Chester, and his faith was rewarded when the Bucks scored the opener in the 9th minute.

Jamie Meddows read a Harriers clearance up their left and intercepted before advancing with Harriers backpedalling and crossing low through the six-yard box for Remi Walker to find the unguarded net at the far post.

The Bucks’ momentum wasn’t allowed to build as Jordan Cranston went down injured twice before eventually having to leave the game. Ola Lawal replaced Meddows on the right, Meddows dropping into the left-back role.

That goal came in the ninth minute, but the lead, however, was short‑lived. The Harriers gradually grew into the game and found their equaliser in the 21st minute. After sustained pressure following Ammar Dyer’s error, giving Kieren Donnelly possession, the ball was cleared to the edge of the area where a right‑footed volley from Cooper was struck cleanly and powerfully, flying into the top corner beyond the reach of Josh Gracey..

Momentum then swung decisively just before the interval. In the 39th minute, a costly defensive error from Piggott proved decisive. A short header back toward the goalkeeper was intercepted, allowing Donnelly to round Gracey and roll the ball into an empty net. The goal punished the mistake ruthlessly and sent the visitors into the break with a 2–1 lead.

The second half saw the Bucks attempt to respond, but the task became significantly harder in the 53rd minute when a red card reduced them to ten men. Meddows slid into trying to prevent Ryley Reynolds and Donnelly’s break when possession turned over, and his intervention was ruled as a denial of a goalscoring opportunity and a dismissal.

Despite this setback, with Orrin Pendley replacing Lawal, they continued to battle and created moments of pressure through corners and long‑range efforts. The Harriers, meanwhile, focused on controlling possession and managing the numerical advantage rather than adding to their tally, although the Bucks’ efforts were largely responsible for their failure to take the game away decisively.

Referee John Mulligan’s laxity in punishing excessive physicality from both teams added to the atmosphere, and both teams accrued plenty of bookings.

Piggott sent a dipping volley at Lovett from 30 yards that the keeper fumbled, but the Bucks couldn’t test Lovett sufficiently.

Late drama arrived deep into stoppage time when the Harriers were awarded a penalty, as substitute Jimmy Armson caught substitute Seb Thompson, who fell in the box, although where the contact took place was debatable. With a chance to put the game beyond doubt, the spot‑kick was struck by substitute and former Buck Amari Morgan-Smith but superbly saved to his right by Gracey, keeping the Bucks’ hopes alive for a final surge. Despite the save and a spirited finish, the equaliser never came.
