Dave Edwards: Wolves are learning some tough Championship lessons

The Molineux hero has his say on last weekend’s derby draw at Blues.

Sunday’s West Midlands derby certainly didn’t disappoint in the entertainment stakes.

It was an exciting, enthralling game of football. There were moments which Wolves will be disappointed with and in the end they will be happy they got away with a point after a dominant second half from Blues.

Very quickly they are finding out what life is like in the Championship, in terms of the amount of matches they have to play and the ferocity of those matches.

They are a team against whom opponents will raise their levels. It is just about navigating their way through these early months of the season and making sure they stay as close as possible to the top end of the table.

Wolves did start well in Birmingham, getting on the front foot and quietening the home crowd straight away.

They took the lead thanks to a terrific goal from Fer Lopez, who started and finished the attack and once again went on to be their man-of-the-match.

At that point, Wolves looked the stronger team. They were better in the turnovers, using the ball really well and had a big chance to make it 2-0 through Rodrigo Gomes.

I felt that was when the match changed.

Blues got back into the game through a wonderful hit from Jay Stansfield, though it was still a goal Wolves could have done better with. There seemed to be some miscommunication between the returning Ladislav Krejci and Andre, who both tracked the same player. It wasn’t Krejci’s man but he decided he needed to go.

They then showed spirit to recover from the adversity, get back in their rhythm and Krejci headed Wolves back in front through a well-worked corner.

Wolves really then needed to see out the half but there was an inexplicable moment from Jackson Tchatchoua.

The right-back has been in good form of late after a difficult start to life at Wolves. This was a terrible blunder and you saw his confidence really dip after that. In the second half he looked devoid of belief and that is a real shame for him, as he is trying to rebuild his Wolves career.

Going in at 2-2, Wolves would have felt they should have been two or three goals up.

The break offered the chance to reset but in the second half they weren’t able to deal with the pressure from Blues, or the intensity they played at. Wolves were not able to string passes together to take the sting out of the game and get higher up the pitch.

Cesar Peixoto turned to the bench for changes but they did not have the impact he would have hoped.

After all that, they still managed to create the biggest chance of the half through Armstrong which would really have been a smash and grab. Once again Lopez was at the heart of it with clever and strong play.

It was a poor finish from Armstrong, who had a tough afternoon all-round. That miss will be one he will have been thinking of well into Sunday night and Monday morning.

On the balance of play, I think Peixoto will be happy with the draw.

This is not an easy division. You have seen Burnley struggle after being relegated and West Ham have had it tough at times as well.

Wolves were always going to have ups and downs but hopefully can get into their rhythm soon rather than later.

One thing for certain is they must improve defensively because that is the area they have struggled. At the moment they are conceding two goals every game and that is not the form of a Championship-winning side.

Krejci coming back into the line-up should help. He brings a bit of calm, is strong on the ball and makes it easier to play out from the back.

At home against the lower teams in the division, that should help. I’m delighted to see him still at the club.

But there is definitely work to do before next week’s trip to Sheffield United, when hopefully they can get back to winning ways and keep a clean sheet.
