Dave Edwards: Shrewsbury still have belief in League One survival

As Shrewsbury sank to the bottom of the table, you would expect it to be all doom and gloom, but it's far from that.

Gareth Ainsworth is creating a real belief at the football club and there's an optimism within the fan base. It's a different environment.

He's made so many changes, in particular, with the structure of the team to keep them in games.

Going to Charlton is always a difficult trip against a team with excellent resources, compared to what we have.

We took them right to the very death and it could have been so different.

Town are 24th and seven points from safety but they could have quite easily been 21st by the end of the day with everyone looking up.

Fine margins make the difference in football and we had a huge chance through Jordan Shipley just before Charlton went down the other end and scored their winner.

That's where the fans will feel disappointed, but Gareth Ainsworth is keeping his spirits high because of the performance.

They're defending well and they're very workmanlike in this 5-3-2 that is working really well.

We know we will concede some chances, but teams are not cutting through us and creating easy opportunities. It's a lot more difficult now for teams to play against Shrewsbury.

When you do play like that, those little moments you get on the counter attack, they have to be taken.

It's a ruthless league, with lots of quality in it. If you don't take those chances then you can end up on the wrong side of the scoreline.

I feel sorry for Shipley because in my last season at Town, away at Charlton, I had a huge chance to win it in the 90th minute and I blazed one over the bar.

I've been in his shoes and know the disappointment that he'll feel.

But it's far from a negative situation at Town at the moment. There's a lot of optimism there.

If they can not get disheartened by a result like this, I do think they can keep building.

Although they're in a tough run at the moment, they have enough spirit and belief to keep pushing themselves up that table and get themselves out of trouble.

It's going to be a huge ask, but they've got belief and fight and that's all you can ask for as a fan.

Town now travel to face Stockport tonight, who are a very good team.

Shrewsbury are in the middle of a really difficult run of fixtures and Stockport is a team which is full of momentum after back-to-back promotions.

It's going to be difficult, but in these games you just need to keep plugging away and picking up points.

If you can do that, you'll go into the games against teams around you with a bit more confidence.

You don't want to be going into those big games in March cut adrift at the bottom.

They are competitive in these games and they need to keep picking up points along the way.

If they can recreate the Wrexham performance and the spirit they showed at Charlton, they can get results.

I have a lot of belief that we can do it and we can pick up some points in these next few games, but it will be difficult.
