Dave Edwards: Shrewsbury finish pre-season strong ahead of League Two campaign

Anthony Scully joined Shrewsbury Town last week and I think it is another impressive signing.

He has played under Michael Appleton before at Lincoln, where he probably had his most prolific spell.

I played against him on a number of occasions and he is a pacey winger who can play across all the front positions, and he played through the middle against Burnley at the weekend.

At 26 he is at a good age and although he has had injury problems in recent years, he is a calculated risk. If he had been fully fit and playing, he probably wouldn't be looking at Shrewsbury Town, with all due respect.

But I have a lot of faith in the medical teams. They will have done their due diligence and while you can't guarantee any player is going to stay fit, I'm sure we will see a lot of football from Scully.

I think he's a player who's better than League Two level, so it's another wonderful addition.

It sounds like he's had a really good pre-season and I think he can add something a little bit different to the forward line for Shrewsbury this year.

Town finished pre-season strongly with a good result against Burnley at the weekend.

They were very aggressive in the first half with the way they pressed and they got their reward with a John Marquis goal off. The intensity they played at was very good in the first half.

It did dip after half-time and Burnley got their noses in front, but Shrewsbury finished the game quite strong as well.

I was delighted they managed to get that equaliser from a set-piece, which is undoubtedly going to be a really good source of goals from this year with the types of players they've signed and the types of deliveries they can put into the box.

It was a really good game for Shrewsbury, who probably played their strongest side.

Luca Hoole was brilliant in particular down the right. He's had a very good pre-season after a good end to last season under Appleton, where I thought he flourished.

Tom Sang isn't fully fit but he will provide Hoole some competition this season.

Overall, it's been a really strong pre-season. There's been enough good signs in the performances, they've had some good spells with the ball, some tough spells without the ball in recent weeks. They've had some underwhelming spells in games as well, which have been rectified quite quickly, but they have scored goals.

I think Michael Appleton and the rest of the Shrewsbury Town staff will be delighted.

The only blip was Elyh Harrison having to go off at half-time. Hopefully he's fully fit for the Bromley game on Saturday because he's key. He did really well against Bolton when he came on and he's going to start off Shrewsbury's attacks with how good he is on the ball.

We know he's a good shot-stopper, but on the ball he can make Shrewsbury tick, which sounds crazy when you're talking about a goalkeeper.

All attention will now turn to the season starting. Momentum will be key and it needs to be built on week after week. That all starts on Saturday.

We've had a good pre-season but it's very important that we, as Shrewsbury fans, don't get carried away.

You just have to look at the last two sides to finish bottom of League One, in Forest Green and Carlisle. They both got relegated in the following season in League Two, so we know what a difficult league it's going to be.

I'm still very much of the mindset that consolidation is absolutely key to start off with. We've made some good signings, we have a very good manager in charge and the most important thing will be to start to pick up points and make sure we're nowhere near the bottom group of teams.

From there, I have the expectation and ambition that we've got good enough players to push on.

We've got a lot of experience in the squad who are battle ready. They know how to win games of football and create a really good team ethos and team spirit.

It's got to start by just picking up points consistently, making sure that you're in a good position.

If we're in the race for the play-offs, or even higher, then brilliant. But first we have to start winning games again and make sure we don't get dragged into any danger.
