Dave Edwards: Shrewsbury cannot let the positivity from the weekend fizzle out

In the end, it is superb for Shrewsbury Town to come away from Wigan with a point.

After 60 minutes, it looked like that was not going to happen, and there was no chance of them getting anything from the game.

But this could be a turning point for Shrewsbury with some really important games coming up over the Christmas period.

Salop showed some real fight, desire and resilience in the second half, which has really been lacking in recent weeks with some poor performances and the team conceding a lot of goals.

Even though it was only a draw and one point, it does feel like more of a win for Gareth Ainsworth and Town.

It means they are only nine points away from getting out of the relegation zone rather than 10 - that doesn't seem like a great deal of difference, but from a momentum perspective, it is good to stop those losses as it was three on the bounce.

One thing that is for sure is they need to start picking up three points because if they do not do it soon, their slim chance of survival is going to get worse.

Tom Bloxham was one of the huge positives from the game. He made a big impact, his crosses led to the goals.

There were a lot of players who were fit and available - only the skipper Carl Winchester, who has a knee problem, was not out there.

They need to take that momentum into this crucial time of the year. If you look at the next four games, they are huge going into January, but the two home games are vital.

Over Christmas, you will get an increase in attendance with everyone off work and people looking to do stuff with the family.

The Lincoln game is going to be tough, there is no doubt about that, but the Northampton game is a clash they can try and target three points in with them struggling at the moment.

If Town get four or six points from those two games things will look drastically different  - they will be putting pressure on the teams above them.

They have got to get the Shrewsbury crowd behind them. They have had such a poor record in 2024. There have been the highs of the Birmingham game in recent weeks, but aside from that, there has been very little to shout about.

It would be great to finish 2024 with some positive results at home. They have got to use the positivity from the late comeback as you need to thrive on those moments - you cannot let it just fizzle away.

There are likely to be changes in January so it is the last chance for some of these Shrewsbury players to show Ainsworth they are the men to keep and they are worth their starting jersey.

That is how I would be looking at it as a player - they will know he has not brought any of them to the football club.

There was a debut for Jamal Blackman who looked reasonably assured in the game considering he has not played any football whatsoever. The boss said he likes to have three goalkeepers. They have conceded a lot of goals this season, but I don't think that is purely down to Toby Savin.

The defending has been desperately poor at times. He has not been the worst of that unit by any stretch of the imagination, but he has made some mistakes of late, and maybe the break will have done him good.
