Dave Edwards: Rob Edwards appointment a no brainer for head coach and Wolves

There has been some criticism and some disdain for Rob Edwards even thinking about moving to Wolves.

I'm in a unique position when thinking about what I would do in this situation, because Rob has a very similar relationship with the club, and if I was in his position and Wolves came calling, I couldn't turn it down.

I fully understand why he would join Wolves.

They have two points from 11 games and it's a club that is very disconnected, with frustration from the fans towards the ownership, but the supporters want to go with the players.

They know there's not as much quality as last season, but you look at the home games against Burnley and Chelsea recently, the fans have really stuck with the team. So that's got to be encouraging for Rob and he knows if he can get a bit more out of this team, help connect the fan base with the football club, then Wolves can go and pick up points.

They are still favourites to go down and it would be a bit of a miracle for Wolves to stay up, but there's still a long way to go. There's still a lot of points to play for, and you just never know if he can get results early and start to get it turned. Momentum is a big thing in football, and if he can shift it into Wolves' way, then hopefully we can dream about staying in the Premier League.

But that is a long way off and first and foremost it's about providing a football team that the fans are really proud of.

Looking at his managerial background he has taken some risks in the past and looking at what he did with Luton - this Wolves team is better than that Luton team, player for player.

Luton gave it a real go, they fought for it and the fans were proud of that. Even if Wolves do get relegated, if the fans can see a team which is trying to win a game then that will bring many of them on board.

It was a difficult job for the interim coaches at Stamford Bridge on Saturday against a really good Chelsea team but it was almost like we were waiting to get beat, whereas I don't think a Rob Edwards team would ever play like that.

He will do it strategically and set Wolves up to get results, but I think they will play with a lot of courage and go for it. He's got to try and rebuild those players' confidence as quickly as possible.

It's one thing having a relationship with the fans. I could go into Wolves as manager and show as much passion as Rob Edwards does because we feel like we're part of the football club, but I couldn't coach like Rob Edwards. I couldn't put a game plan together like Rob Edwards.

Wolves now have someone that is so passionate about the club, but is also a very good coach.

He's put in the hard yards, he's done the younger age groups, he went to Telford and Forest Green, he's managed at all the levels and got experience in the Premier League.

He's obsessed with football and he was like that as a player. He's always looking at ways to improve and he'll have his own ideas about where he can get some quick wins.

He isn't a manager with a distinctive style of play, he's adaptable and has improved teams without ripping up the identity.

He's played different formations, he's played three at the back and four at the back and he'll look at Wolves and determine his key players and match winners, and those players important to keep Wolves in games.

He'll watch hours and hours of tape and then he'll try and showcase the Wolves players in the best possible way.

I experienced two games with Rob as an interim manager and the detail he put into those two games was incredible. He improved us so much.

The improvements we made on the training pitch in such a short time gives me real hope and optimism that maybe, just maybe, something can happen.

But even if we do get relegated, which everyone's expected, I feel his experience in the Championship would be really good as well.

It's important that he does enough in the next few months to show that he's the right man moving forward to try and rebuild this football club, because it is in a big transition at the moment and we do need somebody at the top of it who can unite. He can certainly do that.
