Dave Edwards: Managerial change is a bold, brave move by Wolves

Express & Star columnist Dave Edwards has his say on a chaotic week at Molineux.

Wolves sacking Rob Edwards was something I just didn’t see happening.

That was even more so the case after the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez.

Trippier spoke a lot about Rob being absolutely pivotal to him making the move. Andre had talked positively about him as well, when he signed his new deal.

I felt there was a positivity growing in the fanbase. Those signings seemed to have really helped Rob, off the back of what was a difficult end to the season.

From my own past experience of being in a team who got relegated from the Premier League and then relegated again the following season, I believed continuity in the dugout would really help Wolves in the Championship.

You had a manager who knew exactly what the squad needed. He knew the players already there and where their heads were at, which ones still wanted to be at Wolves and who wanted out?

Having that assessed nice and early gave Wolves a bid of an advantage over the other teams, after knowing for so long they were going to be in the Championship.

Now by making a change, the new manager is going to come in and have to assess everyone for himself, have conversations with the players and get on the same page with the recruitment team and make a plan from there. You end up losing the head start you had.

Those are the reasons I did not see it coming.

Obviously, the board have made a bold decision, a brave decision.

There was always going to be huge pressure on the manager next season, regardless of who it was.

If Rob had stayed and Wolves had not started the season well, it was always going to be tough.

Yet by sacking him, it has put a bit more pressure on Fosun. It is a change which, from the outside, didn’t look like it needed to happen.

Wolves fans must hope the bold decision-making pays off and the man coming through the door is exceptional, just like Nuno was when he came through the door.

Cesar Peixoto is a Jorge Mendes client so you wonder, is it going to reignite that relationship, which has kind of deteriorated in recent years, in terms of the players we’ve had from his stable?

Let’s hope for Wolves’ sake the due diligence has been done and the decision to sack Rob ends up being the right one for the club.

Of course, at times in football bold moves have to be made. The truth is no-one can really judge this call until we are four, five or six months down the line and we have a better idea of the man they are bringing in. Is he exceptional? Is he a wonderful coach? Has it been the best thing for the club?

Something you would say now is that for the fanbase, particularly with the moves they have already made in the market, the only acceptable outcome is promotion.

Anything which falls short of that will bring a lot of scrutiny on the owners.

The Championship is a tough league. You need momentum, you need to start well. Of course, you need good players but it isn’t everything in that league.

Just look at Leicester, they had players more than capable of finishing in the play-offs and got relegated.

It is the culture of the club that matters. Rob spoke on several occasions that it needed changing and it needed players in the building who wanted to play for Wolves.

Now someone has to come in and start again, using their own judgement.

Clearly, it was a decision Fosun thought necessary and they were willing to stake their reputation on that decision.
