Dave Edwards: It feels as if Shrewsbury may have turned a corner

It does feel like Shrewsbury Town might have turned a corner, even if the league table does not suggest that at the moment.

They have only a couple of points, but when you look at their performances over the last week, I feel they are progressing and moving in the right direction.

I felt they were unlucky at Swindon to lose so late, especially when they have been going through the run that they have been.

To go a goal down against Chelsea in the EFL Trophy, you do wonder if it was a ‘here we go again’ moment.

But they showed a really good reaction. They played some really good stuff, and they scored some really good goals. There was a bit more confidence going into the Accrington game – Town definitely should have won that match.

It was their best performance in the league this season, and they did more than enough to win the game. The positives are that they kept a clean sheet, they looked a lot more creative, they played a lot more football in their opponents' half and they penned Stanley in.

Salop’s chances were decent, and there were lots of good performances there. They reverted to a 3-4-3 with Ismeal Kabia and Callum Stewart playing on the wings.

It worked well. The introduction of Kabia straight into the team provided much-needed pace, and I am sure he will get better. It is his first loan and his first professional appearance. He showed that he will add something to this Salop squad this season.

I must mention Isaac England in my column this week. He was brilliant. Off the back of what was a terrific performance against Chelsea in midweek, he fully deserved his start at the weekend.

He rewarded Michael Appleton with a man-of-the-match display. He almost played the game like you would expect Sam Clucas to play – someone who is stepping down the leagues and has Premier League quality.

Cool, calm and collected on the ball, he has a good range of passing, and more often than not, he picks the right one.

It is the start of what is hopefully a very successful long journey for England. We hope that he can go on and play for Shrewsbury as long as possible, but surpass that and go to a higher level.

Whenever I see young players come through, I put myself in their shoes and any similarities I may see of how I was feeling at that age.

He is a confident boy, but it really looks like he belongs there. He comes from a good family, so he will be very well-grounded.

Hopefully he will be the next Salopian who goes on to make a good name for himself in football.

While it does feel like the tide is slowly turning for Town, the points and the goals do need to come, and they do need to come fast.

The supporters will worry that this week has been another false dawn. They will hope they can go and build on this.

It is hard, though. It is like turning a ship around in the ocean. When it is all going one way, it takes its time to get that first result, stop the flow and be able to turn it around and turn it the other way.

I feel they have shifted the feeling, but now they need to take advantage of that.

When those chances come into the box, be ready for them – be on your toes, be on the front foot and do everything with a really positive action.
