Dave Edwards: Home form continues in Shrewsbury's season-defining win

Shrewsbury's win over Newport does feel like a season-defining one.

A positive run of games was followed by a loss to Crewe and Town being knocked out of the EFL Trophy against Northampton and you wondered if Town could bounce back.

The performances have been OK, even at Crewe barring a 20-30 minute spell in the second half, but then you then add into it some key injuries at the back end of last week and Taylor Perry getting ill as well, and all of a sudden Town were facing some adversity.

But it was a really good performance against Newport under a lot of pressure and it's moved them up the table, to the dizzy heights of 21st, and they're now five points clear of Newport, which is really important.

There's a host of clubs now above them within touching distance and you want to really try and keep building on this, although the fixtures do start to get more difficult.

I feel they'd be so happy that they've come through this run of fixtures and it's been an excellent period before the festive fixtures.

The game itself was scrappy at times, as you'd expect, but ultimately Town had a little bit more quality and know-how.

That showed with the goal - not many other players on the pitch could have scored that goal the way Anthony Scully did.

It's incredible to see him becoming the player that I've seen him be in the past and Town fans will be hoping he hits that form again.

He's now got four goals in five games but it's not just his goals that are so impressive.

The energy and work rate he shows, the way he presses and leads by example with that press at the top end of the pitch, I think he gives Shrewsbury another dimension.

That goal was good enough to win the game and in a game filled with jeopardy, it was going to take a moment of quality like that.

Away from that, Town also looked really strong defensively. Sam Stubbs was excellent again and has been in terrific form of late. He won every header, made big tackles and is a real leader out there.

Sam Clucas also added some quality to the game. He was able to get his foot on the ball and make things happen and play a big part in the goal.

Josh Ruffels did that as well and Tommy McDermott looked lively in that more attacking role he's been playing.

There were some really good performances out there and I thought they were well worthy of the win.

That's backed up the home form, which is continuing to get better and better. A third win in a row, third clean sheet as well, and it's the home form that Michael Appleton and Town fans have been craving.

It doesn't feel like we've been unbelievable at home in recent years, but all of a sudden it's starting to become a bit of a fortress.

That's going to be so key in making sure, first and foremost, that we stay in the league, but then also hopefully progress and become more and more comfortable.

It's nice to be able to go back to the meadow, knowing that we can keep clean sheets and win games of football.

It does take pressure off that away form, but that is an area that we have to improve.

We've got five points out of our eight away matches and with a tough away game at Fleetwood this weekend, it's something Town will need to look at and what is not quite working for them on their travels.

If they can find a way to pick up those wins, that will take even more pressure off.
