Dave Edwards: Gareth Ainsworth's appointment could be the start of something

The appointment of Gareth Ainsworth at Shrewsbury Town is superb, and everyone involved must get credit.

Of course, you never know how a managerial change is going to work out.

It could bring positive results and an upturn in fortunes - it may not - but I believe they have shown ambition to go out and get someone with Ainsworth's calibre.

I think it ticks every box for what Town were looking at, given their situation at this moment in time.

They find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table and in terrible form.

It feels like there is a disconnect between the players and the fans and what it means to play for the shirt.

The last three performances have been unacceptable, and having played the game for nearly 20 years I understand that every footballer can have bad games.

But now all I want is for every single player to give a minimum of 100 per cent in every single game that they play for Shrewsbury.

I don't think that's been shown hugely in recent weeks from watching all the Shrewsbury games back.

Bringing in someone with the experience and the track record of Ainsworth, who is more of a man manager, will be a huge benefit to Salop.

I know quite a few players who have played under him.

And from what they say, there is a tinge of jealousy that I was not able to play under him with all the positive things I hear.

It shows players are absolutely all in for him, and I think that's what Shrewsbury, more than anything else, are craving at the moment.

Those players need to be playing for the same goal, putting the club before everything, not their parent club, if they are on loan, they need to put everything in where they are now.

Shrewsbury could be a small window in their football career, but you still have to take incredible pride and determination and give your absolute all.

Because tomorrow is never promised in football. You are only an injury away from not playing again. You're only a few bad games from being out of the team and not getting that next contract, so you have to give everything in the moment and Ainsworth seems the type of character who demands that.

They could have gone one or two ways with the appointment. They could have gone with an up-and-coming manager as a project, which I was not against - there is value in that. But at this moment in time, if someone has a track record and they are available, then they would have been the right appointment, and they have certainly got that.

I really hope that this season can improve enough to keep Shrewsbury in the division, but then this is just the start of a journey that Ainsworth can go on as the head coach of this football club.

Roland Wycherley and Micky Moore have done a fantastic job to get this over the line - as has Liam Dooley, the chief executive.

It is tough to see some of the fans' opinions in recent months because I know how much the chairman cares about this club. I have not got enough praise for him.
