Confidence, commitment and transfers: What we learned from West Brom boss Eric Ramsay and owner Shilen Patel

Eric Ramsay and Shilen Patel sat down with the press for close to an hour on Wednesday - as the new head coach spoke for the first time since his arrival.

Alongside the Albion owner, who spoke at a press conference for the first time since he took over the club, the pair covered a range of topics from the transfer market, to how Albion now face a '20 game season'.

Here are some of the key things we learned from Ramsay's unveiling:

'A coachable group'

Ramsay's focus and his clear message has been something that came out of not just his club media interview, but Wednesday's press conference.

He knows what he wants, and he will make sure the players are very clear on that too.

A lot of his comments were also a big shot in the arm to a group of players who have suffered a confidence hit in recent months.

One phrase given to Express & Star reporter Lewis Cox was that Albion are 'a coachable group'.

That shows that Ramsay believes there is quality in this squad, that they can climb the table. I think his words will not just been seen as a confidence boost for the players, but the club as a whole.

Patel insists Mason was 'not a mistake'

It was inevitable Patel was going to be asked about past appointments, including Ryan Mason.

And he fronted it up pretty well to be honest. He insisted it wasn't a mistake, it was the right choice at the time and now is the time to look forward.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, especially in football. Mason picked up three wins from four and Albion were flying early on and no one was really questioning the decision.

Yes it went south, and went south quite rapidly in the end. But when it came to the crunch Albion decided to move on.

Albion aren't the first club to have the right intentions with an appointment and it end up in a failure, and they won't be the last.

'Silence is not disengagement'

When Patel speaks he is very articulate in what he says.

He spoke a lot about the decision to move Mason on for Ramsay, the timing around it and a touched subtly on the calls from the supporters.

Fans had been booing Mason and calling for him to go for some time - but Albion stuck with him through a tricky festive period before pulling the plug after Leicester.

In that time, certain sections of the fans were calling for Patel and co to come out and speak. That wasn't going to happen.

But what Patel said on Wednesday was that 'silence is not disengagement'. They were well aware that the situation was dipping and something may have to be done.

That comment and the fact he was at the press conference, which is unusual for an owner, was almost an assurance of his commitment to Albion.

He touched on that word, commitment, a number of times during the press conference. He wanted fans to know that nothing has changed on that.

Transfer work is going on

When asked about transfers, Ramsay turned his focus onto what he has in the building and making the most of it.

And he is right, his job is to turn around what he already has. Albion have quality and they should not be flirting with the drop zone.

But he gave away just enough to indicate that new faces will be coming in. He touched on work in the background, and that every club in Albion's position would want to strengthen at this point.

He gave just enough of a nugget to assure supporters that business will be done.
