Salop Leisure have backed the Shrewsbury Senior Citizens League for 18 seasons, this year’s deal worth £400 to a league that boasts 62 teams playing six-a-side matches in five divisions.
Ed Glover, head of marketing at Shrewsbury-based caravan, motorhome and campervan dealership, said the company was proud to be associated with such a successful league.
“Many of the players in this league are caravan owners and customers of Salop Leisure who stay active and make the most of their leisure time in retirement,” he said.
The 28 member clubs span an area stretching from Llanrhaeadr and Oswestry in the north to Craven Arms, Bishops Castle, and Worthen & Brockton in the south.
New league treasurer Paul Adams welcomed the continued sponsorship and secretary Chris Kershaw said: “Having an afternoon senior citizens league enables some of the older bowlers, who don’t like bowling in the evening, to carry on playing competitvely.”
County Cup
The latest bid to end 25 years of bowls blues starts tonight for Meole Brace.
It was 1991 when the Shrewsbury club last won the County Cup, missing out on raising the Glynn Hill Trophy again in 2019 when beaten by St Georges in the final.
This evening they take on 2021 winners Wrockwardine Wood on the ‘men’s green’ at Whitchurch club Chester Road in this year’s only preliminary round tie in the 12-a-side knockout
Both sides are in the top half of the early Shropshire Premier League season with the Wrockites having won at Woore on Friday while Meole suffered a narrow home defeat at the hands of Highley despite having seven winners.
Spring Waterloo
It may be a touch tenuous but there was a ‘Shropshire’ winner of the PHH Spring Waterloo on Bank Holiday Monday in Fleetwood.
Greg Smith, part of Wrockwardine Wood’s Premier League squad for the last three seasons, hit the £1,000 jackpot on finals day of the PHH-backed competition.
He beat Paul Turner (Hebden Bridge) 21-12 to take the title for the second year running while county No.1 Callum Wraight picked up £180 after losing 21-13 in the quarter-finals to Lee Johnstone.
Wood team-mates Josh Cotton and Tom Killen also qualified from the 256 entries with Killen losing in round one and Cotton after enjoying one win.
