At the double! Stuart Rutter defends Mid Shropshire bowls title
All the latest action from across the county’s bowling greens.
There were two remarkable feats achieved by Stuart Rutter as he won the Molson Coors Mid Shropshire Bowling League’s Thursday Merit.

The Sir John Bayley star not only defended the title – after winning the delayed 2025 competition earlier this season – but it was his second league success in six days after winning the inaugural Mid Shropshire Champion of Champions.
Rutter retained the Thursday Merit crown on a soggy finals night for the last eight at Newport by beating former homester Peter Farmer (Sinclair) 21-16 after leading 16-8.
“In the semi-finals Stuart beat Jamie Millman 15 after coming back from 13-8 down while Pete defeated Nick Mullinder 16 from 11-10 down,” said organiser Rob Burroughs.
“Well done to Stuart on his success and possibly becoming the only person who will ever win this twice in the same year!”
Mel Evans Trophy
A mini army of Shropshire’s top bowlers couldn’t help turn the tide in the North versus South match for the Mel Evans Trophy.
The stars of the sport from the North shone again at Llay Miners Welfare in Wrexham on Saturday to go 4-0 up in the bi-annual challenge.
Tracey Bound (21-4) and Sarah Weaver (21-8) were convincing winners of their singles games for the South, captained for the first time by Telford-based Rob Burroughs.
Rich Goddard (21-13) was tops in the men’s line-up for the South and it was close for most of the day until the late afternoon triples.
Promoter Lynn Pritchatt said: “It was a fabulous day of crown green bowls and the other winner on the day was the Mel Evans MND Foundation with £1,430 raised in support of research into MND. “
