Another big weekend of bowls action is on its way - bowls round-up

All the latest action from around the county’s bowling greens.

A double-header of action for the younger element starts tomorrow with the Mid Shropshire League’s Under-25 Merit at Wrockwardine Wood with a 10am start and entries (£5) taken on the day.

Twenty-four hours later the Baron Cup for 32 under-18s takes place at Castlefields with age-related round robin groups leading to knockout stages - and £100 set to go to the winner of the main title.

Mid Shropshire also have their Over-60s Merit at Wrockwardine on Saturday afternoon from 2pm, again with names taken on the day by organiser Rob Burroughs.

And Sunday sees the Oswestry League run its Mixed Pairs at Chirk AAA while the Tanners Shropshire League’s delayed 2025 Champion of Champions goes ahead at Old Shrewsbury.

A Telford green was awash with bowlers as the inaugural John Hughes Family Doubles delivered some Bank Holiday Monday magic.

They packed Sir John Bayley No.1 on a marathon day that ended with homester Scott Simpson and Rowan Fuller roaring to the £160 first prize.

A dominant display in the final against mother and son, Angela and Joe Killen, took them 18-1 up on a three-quarter round peg and they eventually won 21-5.

The triumph came just eight days after 12-year-old Rowan (Wrockwardine Wood) became the youngest ever winner of Mid Shropshire’s Dixon Driscoll Doubles with Sian Skelton.

A total of 35 pairs took part and happy promoter Rob Burroughs said: “Thank you to everyone who entered and made it a successful day of bowling.

“Thanks too to Fab Tech for sponsoring and for the support of John's children Angie, Bev and Dave for a competition in honour of a man who did so much for the game.

“John did a lot for bowls in Shropshire and Mid Shropshire, in particular for Sir John Bayley, and he would have been proud in how this was played – and it will back again next year on Monday 3rd May.”

In the semi-finals Simpson & Fuller went 12-3 up on Ant Backen & Harper Simpson-Edwards and ran out from 13-8 while the Killens converted a 15-3 lead over Carleen Doody-Millington & Peter Millington into a 21-7 success.
