Aston Villa player ratings: Winger stars in Champions League win

We rate the players after Villa maintain their perfect Champions League record with a 3-1 win over Viking.

ZION SUZUKI

Barely touched the ball with his hands in the first half. Busier in the second but it was still a surprise to see him beaten late on.

Solid 7

JOAO GOMES

Played at right-back with Villa out of position but moved into midfield when they had the ball. Lively and strong in the tackle.

Bright 7

VICTOR LINDELOF

Is turning into Villa’s Mr Dependable at the back. Strong in the air and solid when in possession.

Cool 7

PAU TORRES

Played in the middle of a back three when Villa had the ball. Showed a nice range of passing as Emery’s men pushed forward in the second half.

Steady 7

TYRONE MINGS

This was his first start at left-back for more than a decade, kind of. There were a couple of scrappy moments but altogether he was solid.

Busy 6

ROSS BARKLEY

Scored his third goal in two Champions League matches with a header. Always composed on the ball.

Accurate 7

JOHN MCGINN

Back in a more central role. Helped drive Villa forward in the first half in particular. His crossing was particularly impressive.

Tempo 7

ALYSSON

A really impressive performance from the winger, who won a penalty, forced an own goal and was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet himself.

Electric 8

EMI BUENDIA

Took his penalty coolly but should have already been on the scoresheet twice before that. Saw a second half effort saved.

Involved 7

IBRAHIM MBAYE

Always a threat with his pace. Delivered the corner from which Barkley headed the opener. Sometimes seemed to be trying too hard.

Moments 6

NICOLAS JACKSON

Linked the play well but this was a night when his finishing wasn’t quite there. Should have got his name on the scoresheet.

Misses 6

SUBSTITUTES

Matty Cash 6 (for Gomes, 70), Leon Goretzka 6 (for Barkley, 70), Tammy Abrahm 5 (for Jackson, 70), Alejandro Garnacho 7 (for Mbaye, 72), George Hemmings 5 (for Alysson, 75) Subs not used: Bogarde, Kamara, Maatsen, Harwood-Bellis, Wright (gk), Bizot (gk).
