Aston Villa in talks to appoint new set piece coach

The club have been seeking a replacement for Austin MacPhee.

Villa want to appoint Norway’s Pal Fjelde as their new set piece coach.

Fjelde, currently employed by Burnley in addition to the Norwegian national team, would replace Austin MacPhee who joined Chelsea last month.

Talks are ongoing with Burnley over the terms of the move, with Unai Emery hopeful of adding Fjelde to his backroom team.

A former midfielder, Fjelde had a brief spell at St Mirren during his playing career and coached at clubs in Norway before joining Burnley last year.

MacPhee, who had been at Villa since 2021, departed after Chelsea met the terms of a clause in his contract and the club have been working hard to secure a replacement.

Emery’s backroom team has this summer undergone its biggest shake-up since his appointment as Villa boss in 2022.

Chema Sanz replaced Pako Ayestaran as the Spaniard’s assistant, while individual player coach Rodri left for Como.
