Aston Villa ace wants to help club's new stars create attacking 'chaos'

Unai Emery’s team sparked their season with a 6-0 hammering of Fenerbahce on Wednesday night.

Ross Barkley believes a little “chaos” can be a good thing in Unai Emery’s Villa rebuild.

The midfielder reckons the club are on to a winner after recruiting what he describes as “unbelievable” young attacking talent in the shape of Ibrahim Mbaye and Johan Manzambi, both of whom starred in Wednesday’s 6-0 Champions League thrashing of Fenerbahce.

Another summer signing, Nicolas Jackson, continued his impressive start with two first half goals as Emery’s men recorded the club’s biggest-ever win in European competition.

After a slow start following a huge summer shake-up, Villa have now won four of their last six matches and Barkley, who opened his account for the season with a second half double on Wednesday night, believes the young guns are bringing a new, unpredictable element to the team.

“The results were always going to come,” he said. “The performances will come because of the way we play.

“We have unbelievable players and what you saw on Wednesday, that will happen at times this season.

“We have players all over the pitch who are fast, direct and can make something out of nothing with the likes of Alysson, Mbaye, Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and (Alejandro) Garnacho.

“We have players who can go one v one and create things.

“At times it might look a bit chaotic because they are direct. That is how they are and it is about managing that.

“Maybe it is a bit of a different Villa to the last few years with new players and new things. That brings excitement as well.”

Barkley was full of praise for Jackson, Manzambi and Mbaye, who started together for the first time after signing for combined fees of more than £160m.

Manzambi celebrated his 21st birthday with the opener, while Mbaye’s pace caused countless problems for the visiting defence.

Barkley, 32, believes it is the job of the club’s senior players to deliver some control amid all the attacking unpredictability.

Villa head to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday evening and Barkley said: “We have a lot of unpredictable players now. Sometimes that (chaos) will happen.

“We might make a few (passes) and then just go bang, bang, bang and that chance is created.

“It is just about managing the ball and being in good positions with our experienced players, helping the younger lads and guiding them to be in the best position and then when they are in the final third.

“It is like how I was spoken to when I was young by the senior players. It is just about managing that and then in the final third, do your magic.

“The Premier League is intense, physical and sometimes it takes a bit of adapting for new additions from foreign leagues. But it is looking good.”
