Matt Doherty and Yerson Mosquera both made poor errors to foul Joao Pedro and gift the Londoners two first half penalties, which Cole Palmer dispatched before sealing his hat-trick from open play before half-time.

Edwards, concerned at the body language of his players in a difficult opening 45 minutes, was left disappointed with the spot-kicks that ultimately led to the defeat.

"My hands were feeling the effects after thumping a door in a bit of anger," the head coach said.

"We did start really positively and it was a real promising start, and then a couple of really ludicrous mistakes against a top team of brilliant players. It's going to be a really difficult day for us then.

"At 2-0 down, it felt with the energy, and looking at the lads on the pitch, it looked a little bit like when we first came in. It looked a bit then disjointed for a period, they got their tails up and got a third.

"Then it was about stopping the bleeding. I thought the players reacted very, very well once we were able to get them in at half-time and organise things.
