The on-loan Rangers midfielder, a boyhood Gers fan, has developed a close bond with the Town faithful during his nine months in Shropshire.

Docherty hopes to have caught the eye of his Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard having tested the water south of the border in a bid to broaden his experience.

And the 22-year-old, who made more than 100 appearances for Hamilton Academical before his dream move to Rangers in January 2018, admits the Salop fans have made a lasting impression on him.

“The support I’ve had this year has been incredible, probably the best I’ve experienced,” said the nine-goal midfielder.

“The backing for me and even having it back home, people well-wishing me. It’s up to me to go and deliver.

“I’ve got a good solid base behind me. The whole town has been great and I’m not getting carried away. I want to deliver for the fans and give it back.

Docherty is in line to make his 46th appearance of a busy season for Sam Ricketts’ side today, as they aim to take another step nearer to League One safety at Gillingham.

His energetic displays quickly drew plaudits from the Shrews fans, while Docherty has also managed an impressive goal tally, all of which have been from open play.

The Scot reckons his loan at Montgomery Waters Meadow has been invaluable.

He added: “I’ve grown massively off the pitch maybe in areas I didn’t think I had to. It’s a new league, going to different grounds, places where people didn’t know who I am.

“I’m trying to get my name out there more and it’s been great, invaluable to be honest. When I hear the support from the stands backing me it really pushes me on.

“I do want to try my best and I’m so grateful to the support. There’s a job still to be done and I need to keep going and repay them. I feel fresh with five games to go and I’m ready for every game.”
