The historic West Midlands school that's expected to fetch more than £1.4 million at auction

A former West Midlands school will be available to purchase next month at auction.

Birmingham City Council will sell the site of a former residential school just outside Redditch in its next auction on Thursday 9 July.

The historic school is the 11.17 acre estate at Skilts School, Gorcott Hill, Beoley, near Redditch in Worcestershire.

It will be offered at a guide price* of £1.4 million plus.

The historic main building was built in the 19th century as a country house which was originally the home of Sir William Jaffray. In 1958, the house had become Skilts Open Air School, accommodating up to 45 boys and girls aged 5-11.

In latter years, Skilts became a special school, but its services were moved to a new £16 million purpose-built academy premises in Kitts Green in 2021.

“This is a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial former educational campus with potential for a variety of future uses or redevelopment, subject to planning permission,” said Gurpreet Bassi, chief executive of Bond Wolfe.

He continued: “It sits in an attractive semi-rural setting just outside Redditch with fast access to the M42 and Redditch, Solihull and Birmingham.

“Occupying an elevated position with attractive countryside views, this significant site is expected to attract interest from developers, investors, education providers, care operators and alternative-use occupiers.”

As well as the main house, the estate includes a range of ancillary buildings, including a detached bungalow, former caretaker’s house, residential blocks and a gymnasium. As well as, an additional 6.1 acre field offering further potential.
