Fears over schools and doctors being overwhelmed and traffic chaos as plans lodged for 114 homes

Plans for 114 new homes have been lodged for land off the busy A49 - and residents are worried it will stretch vital services and cause traffic chaos.

Redrow Homes has submitted the proposal for the home off the west side of Lyth Hill Road in Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury.

The developer says the complex would comprise 17 five-bed homes, 22 four-beds, 34 three-beds, 33 two-beds and eight one-beds.

It also says there will be a "high-quality landscaping scheme sensitive to the existing landscape character which will enhance the environment for residents and the benefit of the local community".

Redrow also says there will be a children's play area.

It says the development would bring construction jobs and economic benefit to the area, with more "economically active" residents in Shrewsbury, and that the "green space provision" in the area would exceed policy requirements of 27.5 per cent.

However, one objector raised concerns about the loss of land for the public to enjoy.

Miss Ellie Forrester said: "I object to the housing development on Lyth Hill Road because it's going to be detrimental to the village.

"By developing on this land more wildlife will disappear and by removing this green land there will be increase mental health and obesity at time when people need to truly contact back to nature again.

"I think it's appalling that Shropshire Council thinks this alright, there enough building go on as it.

"It should be up to residents to decide about the land, not these property development companies has they always put profit before people.

"I would like the land to be open to the public as it already is and I know that badgers use this land.

"I hope this proposal will not go through as it will be bad for Bayston Hill and we will no longer [be a] village at this rate."

She added: "We already have a doctors surgery, pharmacy and school which is stretched as it is."

In the planning statement, Redrow Homes said a pre-application consultation provided "mixed" feedback, with the majority of comments concerned with the impact on infrastructure and existing residents.

Planning applications have previously been lodged to build homes on the land. Plans were refused in 2017, and an application for 106 homes on the site was submitted in November 2022 but withdrawn in February last year.

Local resident Teri Trickett told the Shropshire Star: "The GP surgery and the school will be overwhelmed. People are going to move here and have nowhere for their kids to go to school. So they'll have to travel out on the A49, adding more traffic to a road which is already dangerous."

"We'll end up trapped," she said.
