Powys Senedd member vows to work constructively and challenge proposals where necessary

In my first column as your Member of the Senedd for Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd, I want to begin by congratulating all members, old and new, who gained a seat in the constituency and by thanking everyone who voted for the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

Your engagement in this election — whether through casting your ballot, attending hustings, or simply taking the time to consider the issues at stake — reflects the strength of our democratic traditions and the commitment of people across our communities to shaping Wales’s future.

Thousands of voters across Wales rejected the familiar narrative of a “two‑horse race” and instead placed their trust in a liberal, outward‑looking politics.

Although our representation in the Senedd has not increased, the values we champion — fairness, opportunity, and integrity — remain central to the future we want for Wales.

Elections are not endpoints. They are milestones that mark both progress and challenge.

The work ahead will require difficult conversations, open minds, and a willingness to confront the obstacles facing our communities and our party.

But it will also require confidence in our principles and respect for the diversity of views that shape Welsh democracy.

Last month, I took the oath of allegiance and began my work as the Member of the Senedd for Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd.

At the first meeting of the Seventh Senedd, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS was elected First Minister.

I congratulate him and Plaid Cymru on their success.

I chose to abstain in that vote — not out of opposition, but because my role is to scrutinise government, not simply endorse it.

I will work constructively where it benefits the public and challenge proposals where necessary.

My commitment is simple: to be a principled, constructive voice for liberal values, and to serve the people of Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd with integrity in the years ahead.

Senedd Member of Brycheinion Tawe Nedd, Jane Dodds
