'The decision sent a clear "open season" signal to other wind farm developers' - Your Letters: June 12

PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVE: A Comet tank at the Fairground, Frankwell, on Sunday, August 18, 1946, when thousands of people watched a display by an Army Mechanised Demonstration Column comprising over 200 vehicles and nearly 1,000 men. The tank is in a bridge laying demonstration.

SHOCKED AT PLAN FOR WIND FARM

When the Garn Fach onshore wind farm was granted planning consent in October 2024 I was shocked.

It was well known the developer EDF had picked a site on peat, and Planning Policy Wales is very clear that peat should be protected as a carbon store.

Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Evans MS agreed the peat should be protected.

But due to the “wholly exceptional circumstances” that this wind farm would contribute one per cent to the Welsh Government’s renewable energy targets, she still approved it. In doing so she set a precedent that ignoring Welsh planning policies was acceptable.

The decision sent a clear "open season" signal to other wind farm developers.

She will soon be faced with another, similar decision.

The Alaw Môn Solar farm on Ynys Môn is proposed on "best and most versatile" agricultural land. Planning Policy Wales says development should not be allowed, to preserve the land for future generations.

Will she do the right thing and refuse consent, or will she ignore the policy her own government put in place, grant consent and achieve another 0.5 per cent of the renewable energy target?

Ynys Môn is watching. What type of legacy does she want to leave for her final 12 months in the Senedd?

REFORM NEED TO LEARN TO SERVE

Sitting on 'The Red Wall' reading the Shropshire Star, and it's associated news papers, it is pleasing to read that our local Labour MP, Julia Buckley, is addressing local issues of transportation within the county and turning up to Parliament with more than just indignation and a slogan.

Likewise, our local Liberal Democrat-controlled council, are continuing to address local challenges; and will be flying the Pride flag to celebrate 'difference and diversity' in the county.

However, in an age of political theatre and rebranded outrage, we have Reform UK performing another publicity stunt.

This time their chairperson suddenly disappeared in a 'puff of exhaustion'; reappearing two days later leading the UK DOGE team.

Perhaps Reform UK should examine their mantra, 'taking back control' and realise it is those politicians who quietly exercise their responsibilities that are to be valued because they understand what to 'serve the public' actually entails.
