'Invest in other ways of solving congestion' - Your Letters: May 8

PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVE: Churchill, May 8, 1945. London. “My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the great British nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny. We have emerged from a deadly struggle.”

WE NEED DEAL TO BAIL COUNTY OUT

For years we’ve been told that the ‘silent majority’ wants the Shrewsbury North West Relief Road.

But the election proved this so-called majority was just a figment of the Tories' imagination.

Across the county voters have roundly rejected the pro-road Conservatives and even highways boss Dan Morris, the road’s chief cheerleader, couldn’t keep hold of his seat.

If the Tories had listened to the ‘tree-huggers’ and abandoned the NWRR years ago, the county wouldn’t be £39 million in debt to consultants with nothing to show for it.

Let’s hope the new Lib Dem administration can negotiate a deal with the Department of Transport to prevent us from going bankrupt.

Norfolk Council recently did this and managed to avoid paying back £33m spent on its own disastrous road project; they also won a commitment from the DfT to invest in other ways of solving congestion.

NORBERT LOSES ELECTION BET

Curses! Reform UK did not win a majority of seats on the new Shropshire Council so Uncle Norbert and I lost our bets with our bookie Spendmore, Bankrupt and Dosh. Still Reform won 16 seats to make them the official opposition to the party that gives away ice cream and keeps falling over in water.

With Reform taking control of Staffordshire Council West Middle Lands voters will be able to see and compare how these currently smaller Parliamentary parties perform over the next few years to see if they can attract support at a general election. So best of luck to "The Shropshire 16" as they will be under a lot of pressure and scrutiny to perform well, with good advice no doubt coming from Nigel Farage. Well Liberal Democrats I have to wish you all the best in running Shropshire as I live here, but for goodness sake stop Ed Davy from falling over in water all the time, mind you it might encourage you to clean up the River Severn for his next visit.

MY PS ON LATEST REFORM TURN

Just when you send a letter in talking about the 16 Reform party councillors on Shropshire Council as the 16, one of them goes and gets themselves suspended and ruins your letter. Well a week is a long time in politics.
