A poem about our memory

The article about “memory” in the Star on March 17 caused me to recall the following. In 1992 I accompanied my late husband, Colin Lycett, to London where Esther Rantzen presented him with £100 he had won for the Crossroads Care poetry competition. I thought readers might like to read his poem:

My Memory

My memory has gone quite peculiar,

Events of the past I recall

But words spoken only a moment ago

I cannot remember at all.

Now I often forget what the day is

Or who has just visited me.

I am always mislaying my glasses

And without them, I simply can't see.

I believe that I know the reason,

Why my memory, it comes and it goes.

Like the sea that rolls up to the shoreline,

Then recedes, as it ebbs and it flows.

Memories are like tumblers of water,

What goes in them first, will remain

But when they are full, it flows over the edge,

And I am sure that my memory 's the same.

Norbert finds odd connections

Uncle Norbert and I have been enjoying repeats of the BBC TV programme "The Good Old Days," and so inspired has Uncle Norbert become he came up with the following; "What is the connection between Morcambe & Wise, fly-tippers, Shropshire's roads and the House of Lords?" Rubbish!

Where there is muck...

Scouts in Shropshire are set to prove the saying "where there’s muck there brass,” as they raise money with their annual Muck Haul.

Digested farmyard manure, ideal for digging in or as a mulch, has been donated to the Scouts by WH Gittings, based in Ruyton-XI-Towns. It will be available for gardeners or anyone else who wants some muck, on Saturday, March 28 at the Robertsford Scout Centre, The Elms, off Belvidere Avenue (follow the signs) between 8am and 1pm. The cost is £3 per bag or four bags for £10. We have not increased the cost for many years. Customers are being asked if possible to bring their own strong compost or fertiliser bags.

This Muck Haul has been held for many years and has proved very popular. Another bonus is that the manure has been put through an anaerobic digester which removes the smell and the weeds. The money raised will be used to buy equipment for the many young people who use the building. It is a wonderful product helping a very good cause. More details are available from John Fannin, President and Assistant Group Scout Leader, on 01743 354743.
