6. Barrow, 1983
A remarkable fossil discovery at Barrow near Much Wenlock in February 1983, where excavation work for farm buildings uncovered the 16.5ft fossilised root of a 300-million-year-old Lepidodendron tree. The find was made at Lord Forester’s estate when a JCB operator noticed the unusual object and alerted Much Wenlock Museum curator Miss Yvette Staelens, who confirmed its national significance. She is pictured with John Norton and the farmworkers involved in the discovery, Roger Plant and John Hailey. | Shropshire Star

7. Jackfield, 1983
Jackfield road is shown in January 1983 following another dramatic episode of subsidence, with the surface of Salthouse Road splitting and collapsing. Council workers moved in quickly to patch up the damage after the incident, which left the area looking as though it had been hit by repeated “earthquake” activity. The scene, captured shortly after the event, features a Morris Marina estate car in the foreground, highlighting the everyday disruption caused by ongoing ground instability in the village. | Shropshire Star
