73. Heavy haulage causes a stir past Wellington’s Buck’s Head
A massive Pickfords Scammell lorry crawls past the famous Buck’s Head pub in Wellington on 10 May 1969, hauling an enormous 49 ton steel girder. The 89 foot long cargo was one of six manufactured by Adamson Alliance in Horsehay for London Transport Board infrastructure works along Cromwell Road. Under police escort, the impressive convoy embarked on a deliberate 140 mile journey to the capital, drawing looks from fellow motorists navigating the busy traffic along Watling Street. Do you remember seeing this massive Pickfords convoy navigating through Wellington back in May 1969? | Shropshire Star archive
