Yarn bombers get busy a head of royal visit to town
A group of yarn bombers have been busy with their knitting needles ahead of a royal visit to Ellesmere next week.
Princess Anne is to travel to Ellesmere next week to visit the birthplace of Eglantyne Jebb and her sister Dorothy Buxton, the social activists who founded the Save the Children charity more than a century ago.
The Princess Royal is patron to the children's charity.
The royal visit takes place next Wednesday and is in response to a joint invitation by the Jebb family, Save the Children’s Ellesmere fund-raising branch and the Ellesmere Sculpture Initiative volunteer group which has spearheaded the Jebb Garden community project.
Ahead of the visit, the mysterious Ellesmere Yarn-Bombers have decorated a postbox in the town with an Eglantyne Jebb topper.
The secretive group have been adorning the town with a variety of knitted figures for the last seven years but are highly protective of their identity. Last year, they even wore knitted beards to hide their faces when High Sheriff Mandy Thorn paid the group a visit last month.
The Princess Royal also set to visit the Jebb Memorial Garden in Ellesmere next week. The garden was created alongside the town’s mere to celebrate the charity’s centenary in 2019, and to highlight the plight of refugee children displaced by conflict.
