Work progresses to bring new homes and retail space to Wellington

Update on scheme which will see more council residential property developed in Shropshire town centre as part of wider £300m investment across Telford & Wrekin

Construction of a replacement building at a key gateway in a Shropshire town centre is under way in a project expected to deliver more jobs, homes and retail space.

The development on land between Duke Street and Crown Street, in Wellington, is due to be completed by the autumn and is part of the wider redevelopment of Wellington.

It follows the demolition of the previous dilapidated building at 2 Walker Street and 15 Duke Street and that vacant space is now being filled with the new two-storey building.

The development, funded by Telford & Wrekin Council and central government grants, will provide residential accommodation on the upper floors for the authority's housing company Nuplace and new ground-floor retail space.

It follows the completion of upper floor residential apartments and maisonettes and a ground floor retail space at the former YMCA building at 1 Walker Street opposite.

The projects across Wellington, which include the restoration of the town's historic market, are creating up to ten jobs, 13 homes and a pair of new commercial or retail units.

Local contractor Pave-Aways is carrying out this latest work in Crown Street and surrounding businesses remain open throughout.

Telford & Wrekin Council leader Cllr Lee Carter said: "This project will create a brand new building which complements and supports the surrounding high street and provides a space for new residential and retail opportunities in the heart of Wellington.

"Not only will this enhance the appearance of the high street it will hopefully help to drive new business and footfall to the town and create new jobs and homes for our residents.

"It's all part of a wider programme which is making Wellington and Telford & Wrekin as a whole a better place to live, learn, work and socialise."

A total of £300 million is being invested into a range of new developments at Station Quarter in Telford town centre, Wellington and Oakengates which are all part of the council's 'Investing in Telford and Wrekin' programme.

The council has funded half of this and secured external funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the Towns Fund and the local enterprise partnership to help deliver these projects.
